Extended Security Updates (ESU) for Windows 7 expires today, January 10th, 2023, and will no longer be available. Additionally, Windows 8.1 has reached end of life (EOL) as of today and Microsoft 365 apps will no longer be supported on Windows 8.1. Microsoft will not be offering Extended Security Updates for Windows 8.1.
Devices that have reached EOL are susceptible to cyber-attacks due to Microsoft no longer providing security updates for these systems. We recommend updating your Windows 7 and 8.1 devices as soon as possible.
If you’re delayed in updating these devices, we recommend one of the following options:
- Remove these devices from your network
- Place them on an isolated network
- Ensure they do not have access to the internet
Additionally, implementing application whitelisting practices will help control which applications can be installed on the device. This will help protect EOL, and all, devices from threats like malware.
Windows Server 2008 R2 Extended Security Updates also expire today. However, Microsoft is offering an additional year of Extended Security Updates only to those customers on Azure.
We would also like to remind you that mainstream support for Windows Server 2012 and Server 2012 R2 will end October 10th, 2023. Paid Extended Security Updates will be available until October 13, 2026.
